Silver nitrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula AgNO3. It is a versatile precursor to many other silver compounds, such as those used in photography. It is much less sensitive to light than halides. In solid silver nitrate, the silver ions are arranged in a triangular plane in a three-coordinated form.

Silver nitrate has many uses in organic synthesis, such as for deprotection and oxidation.
In histology, silver nitrate is used for silver staining to reveal reticular fibers, proteins, and nucleic acids. Therefore, it can also be used to display proteins in PAGE gels. It is used as a stain in scanning electron microscopy.
Indelible ink. Silver nitrate can cause lasting stains when applied to the skin.

As an oxidizing agent, silver nitrate should be stored properly and away from organic compounds. Although silver nitrate is often used in very low concentrations to prevent gonorrhea and control nosebleeds, it is still highly toxic and corrosive. Brief exposure does not produce any immediate side effects other than purple, brown or black stains on the skin, but with sustained exposure to high concentrations side effects can be noticeable, including burns. Prolonged exposure may cause eye damage. Silver nitrate is known to irritate skin and eyes.
